Free frost date widget for your garden club or community garden website
Put your area's frost dates on your own website. Choose the options, check the preview and copy the code.
- It shows the average last spring frost, a “safe after” date with only a 1-in-10 chance of a later frost, the average first fall frost and the growing season for any US ZIP code.
- The dates come from NOAA 1991–2020 climate normals for the weather station nearest the ZIP code.
- It's free for any garden club, community garden, school garden, library or nursery website, with no sign-up. Please keep the credit line under the box.
Make your widget
Leave it empty to let each visitor type their own. Either way, visitors can look up another ZIP code.
The second line is the credit link. Please keep it, right under the box.
For Wix and Google Sites
These two take an address instead of code. Embed the widget address, then add the credit words as text below it, linked to the credit address.

How to add it to your site
WordPress
In the block editor, add a Custom HTML block where you want the box, paste the code and update the page. If the box disappears when you save, your WordPress plan or user role doesn't allow iframes; ask whoever runs the site.
Squarespace
Edit the page, add a Code block, paste the code and save. Squarespace allows iframes in Code blocks on Core plans and up (Business and up on older plans).
Wix
Wix puts pasted code inside a frame of its own, which would hide the credit link, so use the widget address instead. Go to Add Elements, Embed Code, Embed a site; click Enter Website Address and paste the widget address. Size the frame to about 360 × 400 pixels (360 × 250 for compact). Then add a text box under it with the credit words, linked to the credit address.
Google Sites
Choose Insert, then Embed, paste the widget address and click Insert. Drag the box to about 360 × 400 pixels (360 × 250 for compact). Then add a text box under it with the credit words, linked to the credit address.
Other site builders: paste the code wherever they let you add HTML or an embed.
Good to know
- It works on phones: the box fits the column it's in, up to 360 pixels wide.
- The box sets no cookies and runs no analytics.
- When we update the frost data, every box updates with it; the code stays the same.
- The dates match our frost dates by state and the ZIP code lookup.
